Rhythm of Obedience

I milk the goats twice a day. I was late for my milking date with Fern and Madeline today. The girls were full.

When a goat’s udder is filled to capacity, it feels hard and tight. It is difficult to secure an efficient grip to get the flow of milk started when the udder is too full. Imagine squeezing a bowling ball, it’s kind of like that.

The doe is uncomfortable and her body is tense. I work to release the milk until a small squirt yields a stream, and finally a relaxed flow. As the udder empties, it becomes soft and compliant. The rhythm is peaceful, the doe is content, the milk fills the bowl. All is well.

God whispers softly to me, “Obedience”. He shows me that I am the udder with its’ contents under pressure, holding tight and yielding little. He shows me how often I hesitate and worry, how I hold too tightly to my plans and resist releasing control to Him. He calls me to step into His rhythm so that I am able to yield His best and share His glory.

Obedience is a challenge in a culture that elevates prideful rebellion. Obedience is something we expect from our dog, or a “lesser” being. Negative connotations (weakness, mindless, meek) are often linked with “obedience”. Yet, choosing to obey God’s commands is anything but weak. It takes strength, commitment, resolve, sacrifice and faith. We must have confidence in God’s perfect love to become someone who is soft and compliant in His hands.

Obedience is a beautiful, generous act of mutual love. Because God loves us, He gave us His commands. Because we love God, we keep His commands (John 15:10). The rhythm of obedience to God is a peaceful flow that allows rivers of grace to drench a thirsty people.

God will teach a humble spirit. He will guide an open heart. He will lead a faithful soul. Step into the rhythm of obedience.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good spirit lead me on level ground.” Psalm 143:10
